Ebuka Eze has always seen connections other people miss. The harder question is what he should do with them.
Set in a near-future world shaped by climate instability, technological disruption and institutions struggling to keep pace, The Gardener of the North follows an Igbo-Canadian boy from Ottawa whose instinct for understanding systems gradually draws him into problems far larger than himself.
Ebuka begins with the things directly in front of him: a neglected garden, an unfair algorithm, a polluted river, a community that deserves better. Beside him are the friends he grew up with, who eventually turn their shared belief in practical change into Future Footprint. And as his abilities carry him deeper into science and engineering, Maya Kurup becomes his closest intellectual partner, joining him in Divine Intel as they explore technologies capable of reshaping how people understand and respond to an uncertain world.
But there has always been something about Ebuka that technology cannot fully explain.
Unusual events have followed him since childhood. An old story from the North seems to echo parts of his life. People begin seeing meaning in coincidences he would rather examine than believe. As his work reaches further into the world, the question of who Ebuka really is—and whether the answer lies in science, chance, faith, something older, or something still undiscovered—never entirely goes away.
Across the series, the problems grow with him. Climate resilience, artificial intelligence, energy, inequality, infrastructure, corporate power, political responsibility and international cooperation become increasingly entangled. Solutions that work in a laboratory must survive communities, markets and governments. Ideas that can help one city may carry consequences across borders. And every new capability raises the same difficult question: just because something can be built, who should decide how it is used?
Through family, friendship, science, public service and the institutions that shape everyday life, The Gardener of the North is ultimately a story about stewardship: about people trying to leave the world more capable, more equitable and more hopeful than they found it.
Because changing the future is not only a matter of what we can build. It is a matter of what we choose to grow.
